00:06 | Lima, Mar. 16.

As part of disaster relief efforts, some 550 citizens on Thursday were transported by the Air Force through routes involving cities Piura, Tumbes, Chiclayo, Trujillo and Lima, Air Force General Luis Gonzales affirmed.

At night, close to 250 people arrived in Lima from Piura, Trujillo and Chiclayo.

Earlier on Thursday, Peruvian Prime Minister Fernando Zavala supervised the launching of an airlift connecting Trujillo and Piura cities, affected in recent days by heavy rainfall, river overflowing and floods.

The Cabinet Chief traveled to northern Peru joined by Ministers Jorge Nieto (Defense) and Carlos Basombrio (Interior) to coordinate emergency response efforts to assist victims.

Arrangements were also made with La Libertad region Governor Luis Valdez to take steps needed in response to the emergency.

"This is an unusual case; this kind of rain did not exist 10-20 years ago. Many of the areas affected were unprepared because these are rare, abnormal rains," he explained.

In this respect, the top official said post emergency measures will be taken once rains cease to upgrade cities' planning.

"We hadn't seen such rainfall in many years […]. This is unlike the El Niño phenomenon back in [19]82, it is a 'coastal Niño' affecting cities in a different way, hence families are not prepared," he reiterated.

Some 6,000 families have been affected by the emergency in Trujillo.
