Current Ambassador of Peru to the United States and former Finance Minister, Luis Miguel Castilla, stated one of the main axes of his work at the Peruvian Embassy will be to reach the reduction of cost overruns generated by sanitary inspections applied to Peruvian exports.
"We believe the potential is very huge, although there is a series of many sanitary obstacles hampering the access into this market. This is why we will work on this topic jointly with the Chancellery and the Ministries of Agriculture (Minagri), and Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur)," he added.
“There is a series of sectors, as the agro-industrial, for example, for which we are very close to reach the access into American markets for products, such as citrus and mangoes,” he told attendees.
"We do not only sell non-traditional products to United States, but we also send raw material, which have ‘suffered’ a price drop, and precisely, the validity of the trade agreement coincided with the crisis period in that country", he specified after announcing the handing over of his credentials to the White House.
Future Benefits
There is a very strong recovery in United States economy.
"The Embassy will aim at strengthening the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement with United States [...] that caused the duplication of Peruvian exports," he declared to RPP radio station.
Joint Work
According to Castilla, another area that could be discussed is linked to the joint work carried out to obtain the 'designation of origin'. It is needed, in order to allow the entrance of products, made with Peruvian and Colombian material, into the US.
“It is a topic that is being discussed. Further studies must be conducted, but there is a huge interest in the private and public sectors,” he said.
In the framework, the US authorities have shown receptivity to begin a discussion regarding an adjustment of existing Peru – U.S. Trade Agreement.
