Peruvian agricultural exports expanded 5.6% in January-April 2017, compared to the same period the year before, the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute (Idexcam) of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) reported.
"The sector saw a 5.6% rise in the first four months of this year, and sugar cane was one of the most exported products with US$19 million worth of shipments," Idexcam-CCL Executive Director Carlos Posada informed.
Likewise, non-traditional agro-exports grew 4% in the analyzed period over the same period in 2016.
Quinoa and
mango shipments increased by 14% and 3%, respectively.
"This result shows that, despite the '
Coastal El Niño' [phenomenon] event that affected crop hectares in key [producing] regions like La Libertad, Lambayeque and Piura, farming producers have managed to cope with this unusual rainy season," Posada highlighted.
Peru's agricultural exports totaled US$107 million in 2016, thus posting a 69% annual growth rate over the previous year.
Exports volume at that time stood at 58 million tons.
