Peruvian Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Juan Manuel Benites will meet Edward Avalos, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), to open up new markets to agricultural products.

The U.S. official and his delegation will reach Peru on Thursday afternoon. This will be the second working meeting following one in Washington D.C. in late April this year.

At that time, Peruvian minister met with senior-level officials of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), as well as representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

After those meetings, Benites announced that U.S. authorities would ease papaya and mangoes' entry into such market of 310 million potential consumers, which would contribute to the country’s agricultural development, especially in the central jungle and the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro rivers (Vraem).

He also said the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) would issue rules to allow access of citrus fruits from all over the country (so far only five regions can export them) and Peruvian peppers to that market, which will result in the increase of Peruvian agro exports.

They also look forward to hearing of the regulatory progress made for future exports of figs and pomegranate from Peru to the United States.

The aforementioned delegation will first meet with Minister Benites and Senasa’s head Jorge Barrenechea on Friday 11 September. During the meeting, participants will review trade ties and agricultural cooperation between the two nations.

After that, the U.S. government official will get together with agro export sector leading organizations such as Peruvian Agricultural Guilds Association (AGAP), Peru's Exporters Association (Adex), among others.

In the afternoon, Minister Benites and Under Secretary Avalos will give a press conference at Senasa’s facilities to inform of the agreements they have reached at working sessions held between the two delegations.
