The Ministry of Environment is working on a series of programs to fight climate change in Peru.

Initiatives are launched by the Ministry with the aim of responding to the challenge, which will emerge from a lower availability of water in Peruvian Highlands, Strategic Development of Natural Resources Deputy Minister Gabriel Quijandria told Andina news agency.

Although these projects are important, Quijandria mentioned the need for broadening the geographical sphere of execution beyond current territories, where these are developed.

Green Climate Fund

In that sense, Ministries of Environment and Agriculture are considering accessing UN Green Climate Fund resources to finance mitigation projects in the country, above all in the Andean areas, he said.

This fund relies on a global capital valued at US$10 billion; some 150 countries are able to access it. In order to request resources, it is necessary to formulate a project and channel it through an accredited institution, the government official indicated.

"The idea is to begin to create a project portfolio, which allows Peru to become one of the first countries to access these funds resources," Quijandria emphasized.

“In Peru, we only count on an accredited institution, which is the National Fund for Protected Areas; nonetheless, its financing limit has been set at S/.10 million (about US$3.09 million)," he added.

Thus, he suggested the intervention of an entity capable of accessing to greater funds, such as the World Bank or United Nations Development Programme, which can request up to US$250 million for financing purposes.
