Peru: 20 tonnes of seized drugs incinerated

A total of 20 tonnes of drugs were burned in the period comprised between January and the current date, Deputy Minister of Internal Order Jorge Flores Goicochea announced.

The sixth incineration session was held on Wednesday at the National Police Special Operations Unit (Diroes) headquarters located in Lima. It was in charge of the Committee for the Destruction of Seized Drugs, attached to the Interior Ministry.

Among destructed narcotics were cocaine base (650,525 kg), cocaine base mixture (54,645 kg), cocaine hydrochloride (952,987 kg), cocaine hydrochloride mixture (18,233 kg), marihuana (535,980 kg) and opium latex (2,100 kg).

According to a report by the Special Project for Control and Reduction of Illegal Coca Cultivation in Alto Huallaga (Corah), 28,656 hectares of coca crops have been eradicated to date.

Thus, the goal -aimed at eradicating 35,000 hectares of these illegal crops- would be achieved by the end of the year, it was affirmed.

The session was attended by the Director-General of Peru's National Police Vicente Romero Fernandez, representatives of the Judiciary, Public Ministry, Corah, National Police and members of the Committee for the Destruction of Seized Drugs.
