Peruvian runner Raul Pacheco Mendoza took second place in the men’s marathon at the Pan American games in Toronto, Saturday morning.

The Peruvian national controlled great part of the race, but he lost the first position to his competitor in the final stretch.

Pacheco reached the finish line in a time of 2:17.13, nine seconds after Cuban Richer Perez, who managed to capture the gold medal.

The battle between the two Latin American athletes began at 30 km, when they pulled away from the rest of the runners.

Previsously, Pacheco had ranked sixth in the Rotterdam marathon in a time of two hours, 11 minutes and one second, where he set a national record.

Five years ago, the Huancayo-based runner was the first Peruvian athlete to reach a qualifying place for London 2012 thanks to the 8th place achieved at the Chosun Ilbo Chuncheon International Marathon, in Seoul, South Korea, in 2010.
