Peru could possible receive an invitation to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) before 2021, thanks to efforts taken so far, announced Sebastian Nieto, Economist of the Latin American and Caribbean Unit at the OECD Development Centre.

“It is feasible to envisage Peru in the OECD before 2021, but this decision needs be taken by the OECD Council,” Nieto affirmed after the launch of the report entitled “Latin American Economic Outlook 2016: Towards a new partnership with China.”
Two years ago, OECD and the Peruvian government embarked on a concerted effort to implement a Country Program, with the primary aim of supporting structural reforms and, therefore, achieving greater inclusive growth in Peru.

“This process brings us closer, too, since the OECD Council has invited Peru to open formal OECD accession talks,” he added.

Nieto explained that  OECD is assessing the Peruvian economy and, based on several reports, such as the Multi-dimensional Country Reviews or the Public Governance Reviews, advice on public policies is being given to the government.

“These recommendations will not necessarily prevent Peru from joining the organization,” he affirmed.

The OECD official said members are strongly interested in the inclusion of Peru, but this will also depend on the next Peruvian government.

“The enthusiasm of OECD member countries is not enough; the Peruvian government needs to keep working with the organization, and we notice that presidential candidates are willing to continue with the accession talks,” Nieto commented.
