Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Secretary-General Angel Gurria on Friday affirmed his bloc regards Peru's eventual accession with "great optimism."

"While it [potential accession] depends on [OECD] members, we see it with great optimism due to the major work Peru has done," the OECD head told local TV Peru news station.

Such optimism is also the result of "the relation we have had over recent years, as well as the enthusiasm and hope generated by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's administration."

According to Gurria, the "developed countries club" is starting an internal discussion process regarding six countries, including Peru.

"What we expect —in coming weeks and months— is OECD members' confirmation of approval to begin the accession process, which could take between two to three years."

According to the OECD Secretary-General, said period is the countries' average time to work with all committees and eventually become a full member.

Joining the Head of State were Ministers Alfredo Thorne (Economy and Finance), Ricardo Luna (Foreign Affairs) and Cayetana Aljovin (Social Inclusion and Development).

Peru pursues OECD membership

Founded in 1961, OECD promotes policies to improve the economic and social well-being of populations around the world.

Thus, potential accession to the bloc would allow Peru to guarantee the compliance with public policies to boost economic, social and environmental growth.

In addition, full OECD membership would enable the exchange of experiences in prosperity-fostering strategies, as well as the contribution to competitiveness and ethics for the private sector.

Since 2014, Peru has been part of OECD's Country Programme, which prioritizes areas like economic growth, public governance, transparency, fight against corruption, human capital, productivity and the environment.
