The Chief of the Organization of American States Electoral Observation Mission (OAS/EOM), Sergio Abreu, said so far there is no reason to issue any "warning" regarding the electoral process integrity of Peru’s regional and municipal elections to be held on October 5.

"There are complaints that might be addressed to the mission, but the truth is we perceive there are very clear rules," he said at a press conference in the Peruvian capital.

In this regard, Abreu said: "From our point of view, there are no elements that might lead us to issue a warning about the integrity of the process."

The also politician and lawyer arrived in Lima on Tuesday morning to lead a group of 35 people who will observe the said elections in 16 departments of the country and the Province of Callao.

The Mission, which arrived to Peru on September 23, has already deployed observers to 8 departments of the country to observe different electoral organization aspects.

It comprises experts that will carry out a thorough analysis of the electoral process in terms of electoral organization and technology, campaign financing, equal participation of men and women in the process, electoral security, dispute resolution, and participation of native groups.

During the week, the Chief of Mission, who was appointed by OAS General Secretary José Miguel Insulza, will hold meetings with political leaders, governmental and electoral authorities, members of civil society and representatives of the international community.

On Election Day, observers will be present in voting centers across 16 departments of the country from the opening of the ballot boxes until vote counting concludes.

On Monday, the OAS/EOM will present its preliminary conclusions in a press conference and it will afterwards present the final report before the Organization’s Permanent Council in Washington, DC.
