The new Permanent Representative of Peru to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Jorge Alban Walter Peralta, has presented to the Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza the credentials that accredit him to the hemispheric body.
At the ceremony, which took place at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC last week, Ambassador Alban Peralta said that through the organization’s work "it has been possible to achieve very important advances to improve the lives of the people on important issues such as democracy, development and governance."
The Peruvian diplomat further affirmed that his goal as Head of the mission is "to share and contribute to the dynamics the organization has adopted in accordance to the requirements of the reality of our countries."
The new ambassador said his appointment is evidence of the commitment of President Ollanta Humala "in developing a solid democracy and protecting and defending human rights," referring to the discussions the OAS Permanent Council has recently held on how to strengthen the Inter-American Human Rights System.
In welcoming the new representative, Secretary General Insulza noted that Peru "has demonstrated a breakthrough with regards to growth and the strengthening of democracy" in recent times, as the region transforms itself on issues as important as citizen participation and social protection.
The head of the hemispheric organization also recalled that historically Peru has had a very strong relationship with the OAS, both through its ambassadors, and through the activities of its authorities.
"Do not forget that not only our Inter-American Democratic Charter was signed in this country more than 10 years ago, but also that it was developed primarily with Peruvian legal support," he said.
The OAS Secretary General also mentioned the leadership of Peru in other issues, such as human rights, by saying that "this is a delegation that has led the Inter-American Human Rights Commission and currently holds the presidency of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights." "There are a number of issues that mark the presence of Peru at the OAS and show their commitment," he concluded.
The ceremony was also attended by the Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin; the Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Haiti, Duly Brutus; and several Ambassadors to the Organization, as well as Ambassador Hugo de Zela, who is Ambassador’s Alba Perarlta’s predecessor and currently Chief of Staff to Secretary General Insulza.
