The municipality of Machu Picchu in Cusco region announced the construction of a new 1-4 level health care center that will benefit about 10,000 locals and nearly 4,000 national and foreign tourists visiting the Inca sanctuary.

Mayor David Gayoso told Andina news agency that works will get started early next year once with a S/.25 million (about US$7.5 million) investment from the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

The project considers the profile, construction and equipment in a 600-square meter area; part of this land was recovered by the municipality after a procedure conducted the past weekend with the support of the national police.

The illegal occupation of the land involved a group of inhabitants and even a former mayor of Machu Picchu. The eviction had been scheduled one year and a half ago, according to Gayoso.

“The town of Machu Picchu, known as Aguas Calientes, currently has a small 40-year health care center, and the construction of modern one, considered a national priority, will result in a better health care service to locals and visitors,” the official pointed out.
