Special forces of the Peruvian Navy and Air Force have been deployed in Piura — an affected area after overflowing of Piura River—and are ready to rescue people trapped on roofs as severe floods sweep the northern region, Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday.

The 70-man contingent has been duly trained for this type of emergency. They were granted Zodiac type boats and other tools to carry out immediate rescue work in affected areas like Catacaos, which was severely damaged by Piura River’s overflow.

The military unit will be joined by 200 men of the Third Military Region, who are experts in rescue.

Likewise, Defense Minister Jorge Nieto announced his portfolio’s intentions to reinforce Army, Navy and Air Force presence in Piura.
