The U.S. Government expressed willingness to share information, data, satellite images, forecast models and technical capabilities to monitor "El Niño" phenomenon through its National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) agency.
The specialized information and data will also be provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Peru’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) indicated.
U.S. support will allow Peruvian authorities to forecast the presence of anomalies or heavy rainfalls that could emerge to this event.
From the U.S. Embassy headquarters, NOAA and NASA experts informed Minagri authorities about the progress made in monitoring the said phenomenon.
Agriculture Minister Juan Manuel Benites, who also serves as "El Niño" Phenomenon Risk Management National Council Chairman, along with U.S. Ambassador to Peru Brian A. Nichols presided over the meeting.
NOAA scientists expressed willingness to design a forecast model aimed at informing about "El Niño" evolution along the Southern Pacific coasts.
Internship in USA
At the same time, the experts announced Peruvian scientist are allowed to carry out internships in the United States, which will enable them to strengthen technical capabilities and to exchange relevant information about the impacts of the said phenomenon.
In the upcoming weeks, representatives of the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) will arrive in Peru to lend corresponding support.
At the end of the meeting, Minister Benites thanked the American authorities for engaging in permanent collaboration with the Peruvian Government.
