The number of homes with Internet access has increased from 33.7% in 2013 to 39.5% in 2014, that is, 600,000 new families enjoy this telecommunications service, according to a Survey on Residential Demand for Telecommunications conducted by the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel).

Osiptel’s President Gonzalo Ruiz said Internet access is the service that has experienced the greatest growth in the country for second consecutive year.

The Lima Metropolitan Area recorded an increase of Internet-connected homes from 54.9% in 2013 to 61% in 2014.

The rest of urban areas saw a jump from 32.9% to 38.7%, while a significant expansion was observed in rural zones, going from 5.2% to 13.5% in the same period.

“This survey reveals a rise in telecommunications service and in Internet and fixed, mobile telephony access among Peruvian families across the country. These figures show that Internet and mobile telephony have seen a sharp increase in rural areas, where access to services have greater impact based on the development,” he pointed out.

Smartphones

As for consumer access to smartphones in homes at the national level, it grew from 23.5% in 2013 to 36% in 2014.

The increase in use of these devices was mainly driven by young people from medium and low socioeconomic segments.
