Moderate quake rocks San Martin, northern Peru

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale rattled the Amazon region of San Martin in northern Peru on Wednesday night.

Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported the tremor struck at 23:19 local time (04:19 GMT on Thursday) and had an intensity of II on the Modified Mercalli scale in Lamas, capital of the province of the same name, located in the abovementioned region.

IGP’s report also revealed the quake was centered at 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) northeast of Lamas and had a depth of 129 kilometers (80.1 miles).

According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of damage or injury so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
