An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale jolted Huarmey, a coastal town in the Ancash region of north-central Peru, early Tuesday morning.

Peru's Geophysical Institute, or IGP, said the event ocurred at 04:28 local time (09:28 GMT) and its epicenter was located at 58 kilometers (36 miles) southwest of Huarmey.

In addition, it struck at a depth of 41 kilometers (25.4 miles) and was not felt by the population.

According to Civil Defense officials and local authorities, there have been no reports of damage or injury so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
