Peru's Culture Minister Salvador del Solar on Thursday presided over the opening of the 22nd Lima International Book Fair (FIL), show that features over 190,000 titles and 800 activities this year.

Held in Jesus Maria district, the showcase event brings guests from 15 nations to the capital city.

Mexico is the guest of honor of this year's edition.

In this sense, the Aztec nation will host a series of cinema screenings, including children's films and works about immigration and exile.

The ceremony was attended by Mexican Ministers Maria Cristina Garcia (Culture) and Luis Videgaray (Foreign Affairs), as well as his Peruvian counterpart Ricardo Luna, among others.

In his opening address, Del Solar defended and celebrated "the book," which he described as a window, a time machine, a mirror, as well as a technological device that transforms people.

The government official expressed hope that "the book" would revitalize us as human beings and carry us to a better future.

FIL LIMA 2017 is expected to welcome more than 500,000 attendees over the course of 17 days.
