Magnitude 4.6 quake rocks Loreto region, eastern Peru

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck the Amazon region of Loreto, in north-eastern Peru, early Thursday, it has been reported.

Peru's Geophysical Institute, or IGP, said the tremor occurred at 03:09 (08:09 GMT) and went unnoticed by the local population.

The quake's epicenter was located at about 173 kilometers (107.5 miles) west of Loreto's Pastaza district, while its depth was measured at 95 kilometers (59 miles).

According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of damage to buildings or injuries so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
