Peru's government plans to allocate 15% of the money raised from the entrance fees of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu for building the Grand Tahuantinsuyo Museum, Cusco's regional governor Jorge Tito Acurio said sunday.
While noting that Machu Picchu generates about US$ 59.7 million through entry tickets, Acurio noted that of that amount over 24 million soles (US$ 8.6 million) would be allocated annually for the construction and maintenance of the Grand Tahuantisuyo Museum.
"Currently, Machu Picchu's revenues are being invested in the maintenance of the Inca Trail, the National Service of State Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp) and in the Regional Directorate of Culture." the governor said.
In this regard, the regional governor hold a meeting with the Culture Minister, Luis Peirano, and the museum's high-level committee aimed at finalizing the implementation details of the forthcoming Presidential Decree which would give the direct and sustained funding source.
The Grand Tahuantinsuyo Museum will carry an investment of 250 million soles (US$ 90.5 million) and it is set to be open by late 2014.
