The number of luxury travelers visiting Peru is projected to climb 9 percent in 2014 compared to 7 percent last year, according to the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur).

Carlos Canales, head of Canatur, said that these visitors spend on average US$ 7,000 per day on exclusive services in the Andean country.

"The increase in cruise trip offerings in the country, especially in Iquitos, shows that there is a very important demand in this sector," Canales told Andina on Wednesday.

He noted that the number of luxury travelers to Peru will rise 9 percent to 180,000 million visitors this year, after growing 7 percent in 2013.

In addition to luxury cruises in the Peruvian Amazonia, these foreign tourists look for hotels with first-class infrastructure in Lima, Cusco, and Ica, Canales added. "Tour packages for the Nazca Lines and Machu Picchu are also on high demand as there is an adequate hotel infrastructure to accommodate them."
