Lima, capital of Peru, was the top city in Latin America by international tourist arrivals in 2012, market research firm Euromonitor said in a report.

According to the latest Euromonitor Top 100 City Destinations Ranking, Lima leads the Latin American pack at number 34 with 3.79 million foreign arrivals, a 29.1% increase on Euromonitor’s figures for 2011.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the next Latin American city to appear on the list, in slot number 44.

Mexico City clocked in at 46, and Cancun came next at number 61. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic was number 65, and the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo were 90 and 97, respectively.

Hong Kong topped the ranking with more than 23.7 million arrivals in 2012, up 6.5 percent over 2011, followed by Singapore and Bangkok, recording around 21.3 million arrivals and 15.7 million arrivals, respectively.

The London-based marketing research firm, which released its 2012 report this week, spent more than a year analyzing data from official sources.
