Peru’s Environment Minister, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, today informed the climate change deal reached in Lima will be used as a basis for negotiations of next talks taking place in Geneva, Switzerland on Feb 8-9, which will be another important step towards a climate change deal due to be finalized in Paris next year.
This is very important at the international level, since it safeguards the process and proves the text developed in Lima includes all the elements to be negotiated in Paris, which paves the way for consensus.
The minister highlighted that the US$10 billion goal set for initial contributions to the Green Climate Fund has been surpassed to US$10.2 billion, as it is stated in the COP20 final document, dubbed Lima Call for Climate Action, which makes the promise of the US$100 billion funds by 2020 more feasible.
Pulgar-Vidal went on to add that all 9 COP20 decisions on climate finance got approved in Lima, which not only brings transparency to the process, but defines a solid roadmap.
He also underlined that the final draft expressly stipulates all countries have "common but differentiated responsibilities" to deal with global warming.
