Expansion works at the International Airport Jorge Chavez, including the second runway construction, are getting closer to completion as expropriated lands are expected to be granted by December this year, Transport and Communications Minister Jose Gallardo informed.

Technical studies to implement the new lane are due to be submitted by that time, as well.

In addition, the 960-meter underground tunnel along the Nestor Gambetta road, in Callao, is expected to be completed by that month.

Its construction is aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the area and it will run under the land destined for airport expansion. In consequence, the investment will start in February 2016.

“Everything is going to be ready by December. An underground tunnel is being built and it has to be finished by the end of the year and, at that time, expropriate lands will be handed over to the airport,” he was quoted as saying by El Peruano official daily.

He continued: “Studies to implement the second runway are being conducted at this time. They will be due by December, too. So investment will have to be made in February 2016.”

He said the concession of the 30 hectare “logistics zone” for cargo trucks will be awarded in the second half of the year. The area, adjacent to the airport, will be located in Gambetta.

The government official did not rule out the possibility of signing new addendums to speed up the implementation of processes.
