Friday's meeting between Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and United States counterpart Donald Trump will be fruitful and beneficial for both parties, former Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua anticipated on Thursday.

The Inca nation holds relevant bilateral ties and articulated efforts with the U.S., a powerful global economy, in areas such as the fight against drugs, corruption and terrorism.

"It is a meeting of enormous significance and high expectations […]. The U.S. is a major partner in various fields, and there are also joint efforts on the subject of governance," he told Andina news agency.

The Peru-U.S. relation developed smoothly during former U.S. President Obama's 8-year administration, thus consolidating both countries' alliance.

This, Maurtua stressed, need not be any different under President Trump.

On the other hand, the diplomat referred to the countries' FTA, which Peru expects to address and further consolidate thanks to the presidential meeting

"We hope this will run smoothly. President Kuczynski enjoys an excellent reputation in North America, where he is well-known and respected. Thus, we are confident there will be constructive, mutually beneficial gatherings and dialogues," Maurtua projected.

Similarly, he affirmed Mr. Kuczynski's meeting with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, also slated for Friday, will be highly beneficial for the Inca nation.
