Kuczynski, Guterres discussed poverty reduction and access to water

The meeting between Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed poverty reduction, as well as access to water and sanitation.

Mr. Kuczynski extended his support to Guterres' administration, whose term began on 1 January 2017, his focus on conflict and crisis prevention, as well as his appeal for peace amid the turbulent international system and globalization crisis. 

Peru is preparing to play a responsible and constructive role in the UN Security Council, he assured, as it intends to become a member of this important group, on the basis of its multilateral tradition and approach to international law.

They also discussed aspects regarding UN support to Peru to eradicate poverty and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, for which the country will have to be held accountable by submitting voluntary national reviews to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, slated for July.

Likewise, the 78-year-old conveyed Peru's interest in strengthening international cooperation in order to fight corruption.

He also reaffirmed his government's commitment to the 2030 Agenda, in which he plays a special role as one of the 11 Heads of State and Government part of the High-Level Panel aimed at increasing access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

The gathering was held at the UN headquarters in New York. It included the participation of Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna and Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra.

At the end of the audience, the Peruvian leader headed to Washington D.C., where he is set to meet U.S. counterpart Donald Trump at the White House in the afternoon.
