Japan's Ambassador to Peru Tatsuya Kabutan affirmed the Inca nation will continue to count on his country's support for its Reconstruction with Changes stage, following recent "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon disasters.

In this sense, the diplomat affirmed Japanese cooperation covers different areas, such as flood prevention in Peru's main river basins.

In addition to emergency-response support already provided, the Asian nation has "an agreement with the [Peruvian] Government for a contingency loan […], and we will continue to support the reconstruction process in the future," the official told Andina news agency.

Such contingency loan stands at around US$89 million, with a moderate interest rate.

The credit facility is already available to the Peruvian Government, and funds can be disbursed in the short term to rebuild and restore worst-hit areas.

Flood control

On a different note, the Japanese envoy highlighted works with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on a thorough flood control study in the Andean country.

With the assistance of Japanese experts, the 1-year study collected information to find solutions and prepare proper designs anticipating future climate events.

"This project involved studies in 159 basins across the country, and we hope it will translate into flood-control measures, as well as contribute to Peru's political decisions in the future," he pointed out.
