International film festival opens in Lima

The 17th annual Lima International Film Festival kicked off Friday and will run until August 17 in the Peruvian capital.

Eighteen feature films and twelve documentaries will compete in this citywide event that brings together leading filmmakers from around Latin America and elsewhere in thw world.

The festival began at 7 p.m. with a showing of “Los Invisibles”, a film by French filmmaker Sebastien Lifshitz at Cineplanet Alcazar at Ovalo Gutierrez in Miraflores.

Fans of cinema will have various venues to choose from, including the Cultural Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, the Ministry of Culture, the Cultural Center of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with a network of commercial cinemas.

In total, there will be 14 awards for categories like Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor. Winners will receive cash prizes and the Spondylus Trophy from the film festival.

Fans will also have their say by selecting two top movies for the “Premio del Publico,” Peruthisweek.com reported.

This year, the festival includes two first films by Peruvian directors, “Viaje a Timbuktu” by director Rossana Diaz and “Rocanrol 68” by Gonzalo Benavente.

Another Peruvian director, Eduardo Mendoza will premier his new movie “El Evangelio de la Carne.”

Additionally, there will be a number of Peruvian documentaries such as “Kachkaniraqmi” by Javier Corcuera, “Retrato Peruano del Peru” by Carlos Sánchez and Sofia Velazquez, and “La Huellas del Sendero” by Spain’s Luis Cintora.
