INEI: Migrant worker arrivals in Peru increased by 12%

In May 2015, the number of foreign citizens who arrived in Peru under the “Migrant worker” status increased by 12.1% compared to the same month last year, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) announced.

The report indicated 4,953 foreigners arrived in Peru for work purposes. Most of them came from Spanish-speaking countries: Colombia (17.2%), Chile (14.6%) and Spain (11.7%).

These are followed by citizens of Argentina (10,5%), Brazil (7,3%), Ecuador (5,4%), United States (5,0%), Venezuela (4,2%), Bolivia (3,9%), Mexico (2,3%), China (1,9%), Italy (1,7%), France (1,5%), Canada (1,4%) and other countries (11,4%).

During the analyzed month, foreign travelers, who entered Peru through different border controls totaled: 320,311; a 1.6% increase compared to May 2014. The group comprised tourists, crew members and diplomats, among others.

According to INEI, 26.5% of non-Peruvians, who arrived at the Jorge Chavez International Airport, came from the United States.
