The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to be negotiated between Peru and India will place emphasis on investment of both nations, and will also seek to strengthen cooperation of national companies, Indian Ambassador to Peru Sandeep Chakravorty announced.

“The FTA will keep in mind investment on both sides, because I believe it is impossible to have a positive balance trade without investment; we think investment is an important part of the agreement,” he told Andina news agency.

We can establish mixed companies, for example. This is why we need to know about the two markets, since there is a great lack of knowledge on the matter nowadays.

“We think the first step is to know the market, businessmen and people (on both sides), because the distance is a barrier,” he claimed.

According to Chakravorty, in Peru there are representatives of at least 20 companies in the pharmaceutical and mining sectors and new offices are opening, which facilitates the complementary activity.

“However, Peruvian companies can also purchase from Indian companies and then export to other countries in the continent; that is another possibility, because many people told me exports first head to Chile and then come here, so we’d better export directly to Peru,” he added.

The said FTA will enable Peruvian businessmen to enter a market of 1.2 billion consumers.
