Peru is one of the few countries in Latin America that will show strong economic performance in 2014, according to the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In an interview with CNN en Espanol, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said she was most optimistic about countries that follow sound macroeconomic policies, are keeping a close eye on their fiscal situation and have already restructured their economies.

"I would put countries like Mexico and Chile in this category. I'm also optimistic about economic progress in Colombia and Peru," Lagarde said.

The IMF estimates Peru's economy growing by 5.7 percent in 2014, which is higher than its forecasts for Chile (4.5%), Colombia (4.2%) and Mexico (3%).

In the CNN interview, Lagarde also talked about Venezuela's troubled economy where the annual inflation rate now stands at 54.3 percent.

"I don't think that the economy is doing well at the moment and we certainly understand that they are using reserves in a very significant amount," she said. "And that it's an economy that will really have to face difficult policy issues probably shortly."
