An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale rocked the Andean region of Junin in central Peru on Monday morning, the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP) said.

IGP said the tremor, which struck at 10:08 local time (15:08 GMT), was centered  approximately 48 kilometers (28.9 miles) of Junin's Huancayo province.

It had a depth of about 112 kilometers (69.5 miles) below the earth's surface and went unnoticed by the local population, according to the state-run agency's report.

The 4.5-magnitude quake was measured by a magnitude of II on the Modified Mercalli scale in Huancayo and in the nation's capital Lima.

According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of damage to buildings or injuries so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
