IGP: 4.4-magnitude quake strikes northern Peru

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale jolted the northern Ancash region on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP).

The temblor occurred at 14:41 local time (19:41 GMT) and its epicenter was 58 kilometers (36 miles) southwest from the city of Huarmey, at a depth of 35 kilometers (21.7 miles).

IGP's report revealed the tremor had an intensity of II on the Modified Mercalli scale in the above-mentioned coastal city.

According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of damage to buildings or injuries so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
