The recent meeting between Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and former leaders Alan Garcia and Alejandro Toledo is a "clear message of unity and support" ahead of an international ruling on Peru's maritime border dispute with Chile, a senior local politician has said.

Luis Thais, secretary general of Toledo’s Peru Posible party, said the meeting at the Government Palace on Monday was very positive.

"It has shown that national issues are above any personal differences. It is a message of support in an important task for the country such as the ruling," he told Andina.

Thais said that the fact that the former presidents declined to give any comments after the meeting "reflects the prudence that should prevail in the present context," avoiding any speculation about the verdict of the International Court of Justice.

In this regard, Thais echoed recent calls to await the Jan. 27 ruling "calmly, quietly and without triumphalism."

"After hearing the court's decision next week, we all shall support the [Peruvian] government to carry out the implementation of the verdict, whatever it is," said the secretary general of Perú Posible.

The Hague-based United Nations' top court is scheduled to give its judgment on the Peru-Chile case on Monday, January 27, 2014.

The meeting, which included Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva and Foreign Affairs Minister Eda Rivas, lasted a little more than an hour.
