More than 8,000 domestic and foreign tourists are expected to visit the magnificent desert oasis of Huacachina in southern Peru over the National Day long weekend, according to Martín Muñante, municipal manager in charge of the area.

According to Muñante, extreme sports are the most popular activities in the place. Most tourists are drawn by sandboarding, which involves riding across or down a dune while standing with both feet strapped to a board.

Likewise, riders can board down dunes wearing a helmet for their protection, though some sandboarders don’t do it and even use a board without bindings.

Those interested in visiting this wonderful oasis located about 3 km away from downtown Ica, in southern Peru, will also able to take dune buggy rides on sand dunes; these ridges stretch several hundred feet high.

It should be noted that some dunes in Peru reach up to 2 km. Besides, Duna Grande in Ica is belived to be the largest sand dune in the world.

Besides tourists, lots of sandboarders visit these beautiful dunes, as the place has been hosting a Sandboarding Cup every year since 2009.
