Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) informed that 50% of Peruvian vacationers choose Ancash, Ayacucho and Junin as their religious holiday spots.

Other popular regions include Lima, Piura and Cusco, according to the tourism board’s website.

Most national travelers visit temples, cathedrals, and convents during their stay in the aforementioned places.

Last week, National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) President Fredy Gamarra said the most popular tourist destination during Holy Week is Ayacucho.

A large number (98%) of Peruvian holidaymakers plan their journeys on their own, and 40% opt for out-of-home relaxing travel activities.

The majority go on family (parents and children) trips and travel by bus.

Early this week, Promperu's Tourism Director Marisol Acosta announced 24 regions in the country are prepared to receive visitors for this year's Holy Week observance.

"Every region in Peru [24, including Callao], except Piura, is ready to welcome travelers during Holy Week 2017," she stated.

Canatur's head projected domestic tourists would spend around S/1,000 (around US$307) during the four-day-long weekend of Holy Week and S/250 (around US$77) on each day.

The total daily expenditure includes accommodation, food, entertainment and transportation.

He went on to say this year's domestic expenditure will be similar to that of Holy Week 2016.
