A robot that guides those who are lost, a safety system that signals an alert when one is victim of a crime, and a one-wheel vehicle intended to become the ecological car of the future are some of the inventions that surprise visitors at the Indecopi project fair.

The exhibition brings together more than 100 inventions that will be displayed through Thursday Nov 26 as part of the second Annual Convention of Patents and Inventions, organized by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) and the National Council on Science, Innovation and Technology (Concytec) at Sheraton hotel in downtown Lima.

Even though inventions were grouped into thematic areas, one of the creations that stand out the most is “IOMi,” an interactive guiding robot invented by Cesar Lucho, Francisco Cuellar, Michel Sigüenza and Diego Onchi, engineering students at Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP).

The robot has feminine features of a Peruvian woman and interacts with people, providing information on activities and guiding them when they are lost in an establishment. Inventors do not rule out the possibility of putting it at the service of the community.

“People usually see robots as toys. On this occasion, we built a nice one, so that people can interact with it. We call it ‘IOMi’ —acronym for 'Input', 'Output' and 'Mi', a Japanese contraction that means beauty, which refers to the fact that it is a female,” one of the exhibitors told Andina news agency.

Another invention is a drainage device designed to control intraocular pressure in case of glaucoma. It is a flat sheet, whose design creates a temporary space through which the pressure build-up in the eyes is freed.

The idea, proposed by Coaquira brothers, has been successfully used in end-stage glaucoma patients, who did not respond to any medical treatment, not even to surgery. It reduced their ocular pressure and pain.

A third invention is the one-wheel vehicle, created by Gaudencio Sanchez, Pablo Velarde, John Sanchez and Arnao brothers, who predict this could be a non-traditional ecological bicycle.

“Unlike the traditional two-wheel bicycles, in this case you are inside a wheel, which spins round while you pedal,” Berlina Arnao said.

Another popular invention is the intelligent traffic control and emergency network, created by Luis Enrique Lopera and Henry Sanchez, which might be implemented by the Transport and Communications Ministry.
