Cultural tourism in Peru is a segment which is attracting a growing number of domestic travelers who are keen on further knowing their nation’s cultural heritage, it was reported Friday.

According to a new report from the Peruvian export and tourism promotion board (Promperu), 68 percent of the total domestic tourists are eager to carry out cultural-related economic activities in the Andean country.

“Of that figure, 48 percent use to visit churches, cathedrals and chapels, 26 percent go to museums, 19 percent prefer to visit archaeological sites while 18 percent visit historical buildings and monuments,” the study which was put out Friday reveals.

“Tourists from within the country are showing a clear preference for cultural tourism, which is quite logical, taking into account that when flocking to a destination, a visitor first tours the Mayor Square, the downtown area and the Cathedral,” the Peruvian ministry noted.

Likewise, the report pointed out that activities which involve culture contents or nature-related action are showing steady growth year by year.
