The annual and international Festival de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival), taking place March 6-15 in Ica, is expected to welcome more than 40,000 domestic and foreign tourists, who will enjoy a variety of activities prepared by different wineries in the region.

Julio Valenzuela, regional tourism director, indicated that most festival visitors come from Lima city due to its geographical closeness to Ica.

The initiative aims to keep alive the traditions and customs as well as to rescue the true identity of the vintage of the southern region of Ica.

Those attending the festival can also join the Route of Lagares, where they can see the wine and pisco making process while visiting various wineries of the region.

"The nine most representative artisanal wineries have been selected for the said route," Valenzuela told Andina news agency.

According to the program, attendees can enjoy a grape stomping led by the Festival’s queen, guided tours, pisco and wine tasting, a Peruvian Paso horse show and typical dances as part of the itinerary of this 10-day event.

While in the festival, foreign tourists are expected to spend US$100 a day, while the domestic tourist spending is estimated to be S/.100 (about US$32.2).
