As part of Desafío Google.org 2017 contest, three Peruvian non-governmental organizations received more than US$1 million, the Internet giant revealed.

Thus, the initiative will finance said Peruvian nonprofits with a US$350,000 donation for each in a bid to foster innovation projects with social impacts.

The winners were "Asociacion para la Conservacion de la Cuenca Amazonica," "Asociacion para el Mejoramiento de la Educacion Basica de Piura," and "Movimiento Peruano sin Agua."

Projects

The Asociacion para la Conservacion de la Cuenca Amazonica Project combines satellite and field technology (drones) to support Brazilian chestnut pickers. The project's goal is to protect one million hectares of the Peruvian rainforest.

On its part, Asociacion para el Mejoramiento de la Educación Basica de Piura designed MAMA 2.0. This program sends voice and text messages in Peru's native Quechua and Awajun languages containing health tips to reduce maternal mortality rate.

Lastly, Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua has developed a comprehensive system to capture water from fog and manage groundwater for the benefit of remote villages' residents.

The jury was composed of Prime Minister Mercedes Araoz, renowned chef Gaston Acurio, Laboratoria founder Mariana Costa, business leader Ines Temple and Google Peru General Manager Gianfranco Polastri.

2,500 applications were received from 5 Latin American countries, Communications Manager for Google in Peru and Colombia Susana Pabon told Andina news Agency.

The three NGOs currently compete against each other to secure a place at the regional grand final taking place in Mexico City later this year. The national representative will be chosen by online votes.
