Gonzales gives Peru 2nd gold medal at South American Junior Swimming Champs

16:32 | Lima, Apr. 18.

Peruvian swimmer Giordano Gonzales wins second gold medal in men’s 200-meter breaststroke at the 2015 South American Junior Championships held in Lima.

Gonzales was battling it out with Uruguay’s Santiago Saint-Upery for the first place. The Uruguayan led the whole race until the last lap, when Gonzales tried to take over.

The Peruvian athlete caught up with the race leader, who was then narrowly defeated. Giordano placed first with a time of 2:29.77 and, this way, he became double South American champion.

Saint-Upery finished second in 2:29.88, and was awarded silver medal. The bronze prize was taken by Venezuelan Luis Ramirez (2:30.83).

Peru’s recipients of silver discs were Valeria Ugaz (29.51) in the women's 50-meter butterfly, and Ariana Rondon (5:08.86) in the women’s 400-meter mixed medley.
