Former Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua highlighted the review presentation covering progress made by Peru in the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As is known, the Peruvian Government on Tuesday presented its voluntary national review at the UN meeting of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development.

The Andean country was represented by National Center for Strategic Planning (Ceplan) President Javier Abugattas.

In this sense, Maurtua praised Peruvian progress in 30 indicators contained in UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDGs were adopted by world leaders from 193 countries in September 2015 at a historic UN Summit in New York.

They are: no poverty; zero hunger; good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; as well as industry, innovation and infrastructure.

The list also includes: reduced inequalities; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action; life below water; life on land; peace, justice and strong institutions; as well as partnerships for the goals.

While the SDGs are not legally binding, governments are expected to take ownership and establish national frameworks for the achievement of them.

"It is like giving recognition to millions of Peruvians, who are striving and boosting economic productivity [...]," Maurtua expressed.

Within this framework, the diplomat highlighted public policies implemented by the Inca nation.
