Peruvian Consulates might be enabled to register Peruvian citizens’ children born abroad, even if they were born in a different country from where the diplomatic office is located, in compliance with the bill passed by the Congress’ Commission of Foreign Affairs.

According to the initiative, presented by Legislator Martha Chavez Cossio, the registration of minors will be accepted at Peruvian consular offices.

Lawmaker Luz Salgado pointed out this change will favor Peruvians who have to travel from one country to another for work purposes and do not have the chance to register their children.

If approved by the plenary session, Peruvian citizens will not have to confront burdensome procedures anymore, given that submitting the corresponding documentation will be enough to register their kids at any Peruvian Consulate.

The bill, which would modify the Organic Law of the National Registry for Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) and the nationality law, was approved by a majority of the parliament with no votes against and only one abstention by Congressman Daniel Abugattas.
