Foreign tourist arrivals in northern Peru grew by 68.8 percent over last 11 years, thanks to the progress achieved in widening access to a largest range of destinations and the expansion of operational airport infrastructure.
The National Chamber of Commerce, Production and Services (Perucamaras) said that the regions part of the country's northern tourist corridor - La Libertad, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Piura and Tumbes - together received 103,675 foreign tourists in 2003.

The said mark climbed to a record-high 174,954 in 2013, thus posting an average annual growth of 5.4 percent, according to a report carried out by Perucamaras' Business Research Centre (CIE).

Of the total overseas visitors heading to northern Peru, 43.8 percent came from South America. The largest number of travelers were from Ecuador with 15.8 percent.

Likewise, the spike in arrivals was boosted by visitors from the United States with 12.1 percent; Canada, 3.4 percent; and Mexico with 1.5 percent.
