Foreign arrivals to Peru increase three-fold in five years

13:02 | Lima, Dec. 17.

Peru outbound tourism shows a stable increase, whereas the entry of foreigners has risen three-fold in the last five years, reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

International immigration has entered a new phase, which has resulted in a greater tourist flow into the country and a larger number of countrymen returning from abroad, said Eduardo Chavarri, director-general of Peruvian Communities Abroad.

A total of 232,559 countrymen returned to their country between 2000 and 2011.

On the other hand, the number of tourists who settled in Peru in 2006 was 3,823, whereas the same number rose to 10,247 in 2010, which represents a three-fold increase.

According to Chavarri, this migratory situation has given the State new challenges to ensure that appropriate attention is paid to around 3.5 million countrymen living abroad.

Statements were made during the launch of a national campaign on migration issues starting today and running through Friday Dec 19 at the Foreign Affairs Ministry headquarters.

The working group, chaired by Carlos Vallejo, will focus around four man themes: Peruvians and family members living abroad, Peruvians returning from abroad, Peruvians willing to leave the country, and foreigners living in Peru.
