There is an "evident" respect for press freedom in Peru and the plurality of opinions is guaranteed, Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Maria Sanchez affirmed on Friday.
The publications, which criticize President Ollanta Humala’s administration, have not been imposed any type of censorship, she pointed out.
According to the Minister, the topic concerning media in Peru was addressed in an interview the President granted to a well-known journalist during an official trip to Spain. Thus, it was made clear that despite criticism, press freedom is respected.
“There can be criticism, but there is evidently a respect for press freedom in Peru, unlike other nations; that reflection is important because in a democratic country there must be also different opinions,” she told Andina news agency.
Ana Maria Sanchez mentioned censorship is not exercised in the country "no matter what is said."
Likewise, she affirmed the newspaper points of sale prove published information is free and based on different approaches and stances without any restrictions.
On Friday Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano also affirmed the government is committed to respecting freedom in Peru.
