Fishing activity in Peru generates a total of 221,000 jobs and contributes about two percent to the country's gross domestic product.

According to data from the National Fisheries Society (SNP), the sector creates 121,000 direct and 100,000 indirect jobs related to commercial fishing and manufacturing activity.

In a report released Tuesday, the SNP said that the fishing industry contributed about 1.9 percent annually to the national gross domestic product between 2000 and 2012.

"While this rate has hovered around 2 percent for several years, it dropped to 1.5% and 1.6% in 2010 and 2012, respectively, but it recovered to 1.7 percent in 2013," the SNP explained.

In 2011, the fishing sector contributed a record 2.1 percent to Peru's GDP.

"In absolute terms, fishing activity has grown at an average annual rate of 7 percent between 2000 and 2012, compared to an average growth of 6 percent of the total economy," it added.
