Schalke 04 will be without Peruvian winger Jefferson Farfan when they face Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday.

Farfan, who has missed Schalke's last two league games with a niggling knee problem, did not travel with the team to Spain on Monday.

The Royal Blues are eager to rest key players as they battle for a top three finish in the Bundesliga.

Schalke must overcome Real Madrid, a five-goal deficit and the history books if they are to seal a UEFA Champions League quarter-final spot.

Carlo Ancelotti's side ran riot in the first leg in Gelsenkirchen last month, with braces from Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale helping the visitors to a 6-1 win.

That scoreline all but confirms Real's presence in the last eight of Europe's premier club competition, with Schalke unlikely to produce a rare comeback on Tuesday at the Bernabeu.
