Peru’s economic growth is important, for it enables resources to become more accessible to underprivileged sectors, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) representative in Peru, John Preissing, affirmed.

"Peru managed to achieve the first objective of the Millennium Development Goals by reducing its undernourishment rate by half, in absolute numbers and percentages. However, the more difficult challenges are now to be faced, such as reducing the undernutrition rates because those are related to the deepest levels of poverty," he told Andina news agency.

Economic growth guarantees underprivileged people will have access to resources and social protection thanks to initiatives such as: Qali Warma, the National School Nutrition Program; or Juntos, the National Program for Direct Support to the Poorest.

“These programs must remain on track because, naturally, there will be moments, in which the economy will not be rising. Nonetheless, mechanisms will be available to control undernutrition," he added.
