Peru will be one of the first countries in Latin America to overcome hunger by 2030, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in Peru John Preissing said in a statement on the occasion of the World Food Day.

“Here at FAO we are convinced Latin American hunger can be overcome in 15 years through 2030, and that Peru, as leader of such process, will be one of the first countries to do it,” he pointed out.

The key to accomplishing the “Zero Hunger” challenge lies in promoting agricultural production.

Strides Made by Peru

According to the UN expert, elimination of hunger in Peru is reflected in reduced undernourishment rates.

“We know this rate (that of undernourishment) has declined since 2000 until now, from 32% to 7.5%, which is a significant progress,” Preissing underlined.

He stressed that the agriculture sector, especially quinoa, kiwicha and cañihua crops, have helped diminish undernourishment rates in Peru.
